After living as an artist in New York for ten years and having his work included in major museums and private collections around the world, Eller established artnet's German office. After a groundbreaking collaboration between Art Basel and artnet and a successful foray into the Chinese art market in 2006, he was asked to join the Temporäre Kunsthalle Berlin as director. From 2008 to 2010, the Temporäre Kunsthalle Berlin presented Berlin artists on the Schloßplatz in the heart of Berlin, the current location of the Humboldt Forum.
After successfully curating the exhibition ‘The 8 of Ways’ of 25 young Beijing artists in Berlin, Thomas Eller moved to Beijing and became founder of Gallery Weekend Beijing and president of Ran Dian, an English-Chinese art magazine, as well as one of the four curators of the 7th Guangzhou Triennale.
Art comes to Franconia
In his own gallery in Franconia, artists from China and Central Asia such as Meng Huang, Almagul Menlibaeva, Saodat Ismailova and Gulnur Mukhazhanova are now being put in context with German post-war artists such as K.O. Goetz, Bernard Schultze, Gerhard Hoehme, KRH Sonderborg and the South American artist Michelle Marie Letelier. These are all artists who have recently exhibited at the documenta, the Venice Biennale, the Grand Palais Paris, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Guangzhou Triennial and the Sharjah Biennial.
THEgallery looks deep into history and far into geography. In an old watermill on the River Itz, artist and curator Thomas Eller provides an exciting insight into the diversity of contemporary art in rural Franconia not far from Bamberg.
