"Grand Tour" through Franconian Switzerland is the motto for all those wanting to experience as much of this region's romantic landscape as possible without having to walk long distances.
Option 1: Through the Upper Main Valley including the spectacular pilgrim's church Fourteen Saints, through the Kleinziegenfeld Valley on to Wonsee and Sanspareil, the landscape garden of markgravine Wilhemine, Friedrich the Great's favourite sister. After this enchanting experience, you will get to see the wildly romantic valleys of Franconian Switzerland. Time allowing, you can add a visit of baroque Schloss Seehof Palace, the former summer residence of Bamberg’s prince bishops.
Option 2: Via Buttenheim (the birthplace of Levi Strauss), Drügendorf and Ebermannstadt into the Wiesent Valley. The tour continues to Streitberg and Muggendorf (option to visit an Ore Mountain arts and crafts workshop) and Gößweinstein, the well-known pilgrim's town featuring Balthasar Neumann's basilica. This is followed by the climatic spa Pottenstein, which is surrounded by cliffs and slopes full of juniper and sloeberry bushes which are so typical of Franconian Switzerland. The bizarre cliffside village of Tüchersfeld is the next stop; then on to Ailsbach Valley with Rabenstein Castle and Klausstein Chapel and back to Bamberg.
