The bronze sculpture „Centurione I”, by Polish sculptor Igor Mitoraj, was created in 1987 and combines antique forms with modern elements of decay. Inspired by the classical masters of the Renaissance, such as Michelangelo, Mitoraj deliberately adds fractures and damage to his works. The statue shows the oversized fragment of a youthful-looking face with large parts missing - including both eyes and the back of the head. The artist thus thematizes both the imperfection of the human body and its fragility.
The sculpture was acquired by the Friends of the International Artists' House Villa Concordia e.V. with the support of the Oberfrankenstiftung and private donors
