The Easter Grave in Baunach

The scenery consists of 38 wooden panels, which completely fills the sanctuary and even offers a three-dimensional effect that is very modern today. The Baunacher Easter grave, as it is officially called, was created between 1750 and 1755 and was made by a Baunacher carpenter. Experts now agree that the painting came from Johann Anwander, who is also responsible for the colorful Bamberg Bridge Town Hall. The sophisticated modular system is impressive.

God the Father is enthroned above the Easter grave and hurls lightning bolts from heaven towards earth, Moses with the tablets of the law can be seen and the evangelist John with his gospel. Particularly impressive is the portrayal of Jonas, who is being spewed out again by a whale rolling his eyes. During the Easter Vigil, Jesus lying in the tomb is exchanged for the risen Christ with the flag of victory - a process that is always touching for those who attend the service.
