The former monastery complex of St. Michael rises prominently on Michaelsberg hill above Bamberg's old town. At the instigation of Emperor Henry II, the Benedictine monastery was founded around 1015. As early as the 12th century, the monastery gained considerable importance under Bishop Otto I, and the number of monks increased.
Over the centuries, the complex was repeatedly affected by earthquakes, fires and wars. However, it was always rebuilt and expanded.
The Baroque renovations of the 17th and 18th centuries gave the monastery complex its current appearance. The monastery church, the abbey wings, the convent building, the forecourt and gardens form a cohesive ensemble with an impressive effect, which was largely designed by the Dientzenhofer brothers.
The terrace behind the church offers a panoramic view of the city. It is also worth taking a stroll through the Michaelsberg Garden, a Baroque terraced garden with a fountain and two pavilions. Please note, that the church cannot be visited inside at the moment, because of ongoing comprehensive restoration work. But at last, the end of 14 years of construction works is near and we are all looking forward to the grand reopening of the church St. Michael's in April 2026!
