Schlenkerla - historical brewery and inn
First documented mention in 1405; the origin of Bamberg's speciality "Aecht Schlenkerla" smoke beer.
Set in the heart of Bamberg's old city centre, at the foot of the high Cathedral, we stumble across the historical brewery inn known as Schlenkerla. It was first mentioned in a document in 1405, has been run by the Trum family for six generations and is, of course, the source of Bamberg's speciality "Aecht Schlenkerla" smoke beer. Following the old tradition, smoke beer is still tapped straight from the oak barrels. Anyone who has not ventured into the inn and tried the spicy, unmistakable taste of "Aecht Schlenkerla" smoke beer, cannot claim to have been to Bamberg. "Schlenkerla" has long since been a magic word in Bamberg, though not many know how its origin. The inn was actually named after a former in-house brewer several centuries ago because of his rather wobbly (schlenkernd) gait which had been caused by an accident. Even though the sixth generation of brewers is now at work here, the name has lived on into the 21st century, even on the internet: www.Schlenkerla.de
