Founded by Julius von Soden in the late 18th century, Sassanfahrt Palace was meant to be his retreat for his literary ambitions. He settled down and built not only his palace, but also many small houses for his subjects, called Tropfhäuser. They were called drip houses, because the ground on which they stood went just as far as to where the water dropped from the roofs, so not really very far.
Von Soden neglected his duties as landlord, though, and the people living in his houses on his grounds lived in great poverty. Today, these houses have been renovated and people living there are proud of the history of their homes. Von Soden’s Palace has now also been restored and houses a centre for culture and education, offering a location for events, weddings, celebrations, meetings, and adult education. The palace is surrounded by a small garden.
