“Brandmal” by Miriam Giessler and Hubert Sandmann

The floor-to-ceiling light sculpture „Brandmal” made of Cor-Ten steel and acrylic glass was created by the Essen-based artists Miriam Giessler and Hubert Sandmann. As a “witch memorial”, it commemorates the victims of the witch hunts in the former Bamberg diocese. Between 1612 and 1631 in particular, the region was a center of these cruel trials, in which around 1000 innocent women, men and children were tortured and executed.

In the 17th century, Bamberg Abbey was the scene of one of the darkest chapters in European history.
Between 1612 and 1630/31, up to 1000 people fell victim to the witch trials.
