The market town of Heiligenstadt i. OFr. forms the southeastern corner of Bamberg County and is also the northwestern part of the region called Franconian Switzerland. It comprises 24 affiliated villages, which are located along the valley of the Leinleiter River and on the immediately adjacent Jura plateau.
Heiligenstadt is the third largest municipality of Bamberg County with 77 km², but belongs to the more sparsely populated areas of the region. Today, around 3,550 inhabitants live in the villages and in the market town of Heiligenstadt itself.
The market town of Heiligenstadt i. OFr. is a state-approved health resort and lies in the romantic Leinleitertal valley with its numerous charming side valleys. A paradise for hikers, cyclists and climbers. Cosy family-friendly inns with Franconian specialities are happy to be your host.
Heiligenstadt i. OFr. is also well known for its beautiful Easter fountains. Greifenstein Castle, perched high up on a rock above Heiligenstadt, is worth a visit at any time of the year. Because of its high towers it is also called “Little Neuschwanstein”.
