Art meets history at Michelsberg Monastery in Bamberg: Japanese artist Kazuo Katase, who has lived in Germany for many years, created the impressive artwork “Wandelung” here, which focuses on the changes to this special place: Until well into the modern era, there was a vineyard on the slope below the Michelsberg monastery, which was only converted into a meadow orchard in the 19th century. In the middle of this meadow, Katase erected a square, hollow concrete element reminiscent of a fountain - a central design element of his artistic intention. Clearly visible old vines are framed in the concrete, reminiscent of the former vineyard and emphasizing the historical significance of the site. A polished black granite hemisphere rests on one corner of the fountain. Its shape resembles a bowl of water, on whose shiny surface the sky or the towers of Bamberg Cathedral are reflected - depending on the viewer's perspective. The slope is now being used as a vineyard again, so that the artwork is surrounded by vines.
The installation was created as part of a Villa Concordia project to celebrate the 1000th anniversary of the Bamberg diocese in 2007.
