Particularly in the 19th century, Bamberg occupied a unique position in Franconia with its 65 breweries and even today beer is still brewed in many mostly medium-sized family run breweries. This unique tradition culminates in the annual Beer Day (23 April). On this day, visitors can compare and enjoy the wide range of different beers available on Maxplatz square in Bamberg. Unbunged beer, pilsener style, wheat beer, smoke beer - everything that the heart of a beer connoisseur could desire is available in one place on one day.
