Baroque Jewel and Gentle Hills
Around Weissenstein Palace and Pommersfelden
Lothar Franz, the count of Schönborn, inherited a moated castle, which he deemed not prestigious enough for him. Hence, the famous architect Johann Dientzenhofer built him a marvellous summer residence: Weissenstein Palace near Pommersfelden.
It took 17 years to complete and the result was a vast, pompous stairwell, the marble hall and the Sala Terrena; meticulously embellished with tuff and mussels it bears close resemblance to a grotto. By no means less magical than the castle itself is the gentle, undulating landscape around Pommersfelden, which you will discover on this tour.
