Market gardeners, wine growers and sculptures

With its extensive, free expanses and typical market gardening houses, the market gardeners' district still shapes Bamberg's cityscape.

Centuries ago, Bamberg's market gardeners were already exporting their products – onion sets, seeds and especially liquorice - well beyond the city borders. Even to this day, they are still referred to as the "onion treaders". In the market gardeners' quarter, the typical "market gardening" houses can still be found as they were in the days when they housed numerous market gardening families.

Unique in Germany

The medieval structures of the house gardens have been preserved, and such cultivation areas in the middle of a city are unique in Germany. No wonder that these inner-city gardening areas contributed significantly to Bamberg's designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The cultivation and purchase of fresh vegetables directly from the city within the city is sustainable, and the traditions and customs of the gardeners are now also part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage
