Between 1872 and 1946, the Music Society was the primary organizer of classical music concerts in Bamberg. In the first half of the 20th century, world-class orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic under Wilhelm Furtwängler were engaged. Since the founding of the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, the Bamberg Music Society has specialized in chamber music. Concerts of the Music Society are regularly recorded by Bavarian Radio and broadcast on BR-Klassik.
The names of the artists and ensembles engaged by the Bamberg Music Society read like a who's who of the international classical music scene. In recent years, the Music Society has hosted performances by, among others, the King’s Singers, the Barbican String Quartet, the young pianists Lukas Sternath and Justus Friedrich Eichhorn, the violinist Seiji Okamoto, the cellist Andrei Ioniță, the clarinetist Sabine Meyer, and the tenor Christoph Prégardien.
The society, which received the E.T.A. Hoffmann Prize from the city of Bamberg in 2012, is a non-profit organization and is managed by a volunteer board – chaired by Stephan Schultz since 2022. Membership in the Music Society is not contingent upon purchasing a subscription or ticket.
For over 150 years, the Music Society has been a fixture in the cultural life of this World Heritage city. Each season (September to May), it presents seven high-caliber concerts with internationally renowned soloists and ensembles in the Joseph Keilberth Hall of the Bamberg Concert Hall
