For over 600 years, commercial gardeners with their characteristic houses and long, narrow gardens have cultivated plots of land, some of which are still cultivated today and are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. A gem in the heart of this old town is the Gardeners' and Winegrowers' Museum.
As an open-air museum housed in an 18th-century gardener's cottage with its garden, it offers insights into the life of a prosperous gardening family around 1900. The exhibition presents, through objects and film, the working methods, the Europe-wide trade in vegetables, seeds, and licorice, the guild, and the religious customs of the gardeners and winegrowers.
The garden cultivates the crops of both professions, including licorice, for which Bamberg held a near-monopoly from around 1500. Onions are also featured, giving the citizens of Bamberg their nickname, "Onion Stompers."
Discover the lives and work of gardeners and winegrowers in Bamberg.
