Why is there a nativity scene exhibition organized by the Department of European Ethnology at the University of Bamberg?
European Ethnology studies everyday culture in the present and the past. Building nativity scenes is one such expression of everyday culture. People come together to engage in a craft. Or is it a form of religious expression? What motivates people to build a Christmas nativity scene? Or more than 10? European ethnologists find out when they observe people building nativity scenes or interview them. In this exhibition, organized on a volunteer basis by student Stefanie Lunz, she and other nativity scene builders of all ages, genders, and religious affiliations showcase their nativity scenes and reveal the motivations and ideas behind their creations.
