The cello playing of the Dutchman Pieter Wispelwey (born 1962) is distinguished by an extraordinary level of technical and artistic mastery. He is dedicated both to historically informed performance practice and to the interpretation of contemporary cello repertoire; his range extends from Bach to Elliott Carter.
His artistic versatility is rooted in extensive studies with Dicky Boeke and Anner Bylsma (in Amsterdam), followed by further training with Paul Katz (in the USA) and William Pleeth (in England). In 1992, he became the first—and to date, the only—cellist to receive the Dutch Music Prize, and in 1997, he was named "Musician of the Year" by the Belgian press.
Pieter Wispelwey’s artistic career spans the globe, with solo performances regularly taking him to major concert halls and cities worldwide. His extensive discography comprises more than 30 titles, six of which have received significant international awards. His second recording of J.S. Bach’s six solo suites earned three separate honors, including the *Diapason d’or*.
