The period between Ash Wednesday and Easter is known as Lent, also called Passiontide. During these 40 days, Christians prepare for Easter and commemorate the suffering and death of Christ.
A visit to Bamberg during Easter vividly illustrates that, in addition to the famous Bamberg Christmas cribs, the so-called Lenten or Passion cribs also have a long tradition here. The "Serious Crib," as it is often called, encompasses the liturgical season from Palm Sunday to Easter Monday and depicts the suffering and death of Jesus Christ in particularly moving scenes. Passion scenes can also be admired in the year-round cribs.
