“Apoll” by Markus Lüpertz

The sculpture „Apoll”, one of the archaic works based on classical motifs by the much discussed German artist Markus Lüpertz, has found its place next to the choir of the Elisabethenkirche. The “master” himself, as his students call him, chose the location. In ancient mythology, Apoll is regarded as the god of the muses, light and the art of healing. This impressive figure embodies religious diversity, mutual respect and tolerance. It is said to reflect beauty and vanity as well as discord and war. For the artist, this „Apoll” is a guardian of the arts - both as a protector and as an avenger. The plinth is 90 centimetres high and the sculpture 1.88 m.

When the sculpture was unveiled, Lüpertz had the idea to create stained-glass windows in St. Elisabeth's church, immediately behind the statue. The artist Markus Lüpertz designed eight different windows which will be fitted gradually within the next few years.
