Donated by the Franconian Market Merchants' Association, a Franconian-style nativity scene with 1.05-meter-tall figures has been set up annually during the Christmas market since 1983.
The figures are made with a wire frame and hand-carved wooden limbs and heads by the Kreuz company in Gröbenzell near Munich. The matching clothing was made by Rosemarie Hofmann and Hildegard Markl from the Bamberg Nativity Scene Friends Association. Members of the association still care for the nativity scene today. The nativity scene, in the Franconian half-timbered style, was built by the Montag carpentry shop in Gaustadt.
The change of scenery is certainly unusual for a nativity scene intended to enhance the Christmas market. And thanks to the generosity of the market merchants, the nativity scene can be seen even after Christmas Eve, with the Adoration of the Magi, until January 6th.
