Rising prominently on a hill in the village of Lisberg, this castle has a remarkable history. It was first mentioned in a document dating back to 820. Lisberg Castle escaped destruction in the many conflicts that shaped the region over the centuries, thanks in part to the skilful diplomacy of its owners: the castle owed feudal allegiance to both the Catholic Prince-Bishops of Würzburg and the Protestant Margraves of Ansbach.
The castle’s long history is reflected in its varied architectural styles. The imposing keep, the Gothic Frauenhaus (Ladies’ House) and the Renaissance residential building, with its historic castle kitchen and Knights’ Hall, make the complex a notable example of medieval and early modern architecture in the Bamberg region.
Good to know
Lisberg Castle is privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside. It is not open to the public.
