Bamberg boasts one of Germany's oldest apothecaries, it was home to Europe's most modern hospital, bringing forth doctors like Dr. Eisenbarth, Dr. Markus, Dr. Schönlein and Dr. Wassermann. Pilgrims and the poor could find shelter and care at the large infirmaries, whilst the plague and syphilis were fought in the pestilence houses. Attempts were also made to research health in studies conducted at a medical faculty. When nothing else helped, they would pray to saints such as Elisabeth of Thuringia, empress Kunigunde or Hildegard von Bingen.
